This is the web site for Grains of Hope program which was founded by a number of churches and civic groups in Pequannock Township, NJ. Our mission is to address world hunger by providing food where there is great need, and where other external sources are insufficient to meet the need. A current listing of our sponsor organizations is at the bottom of this page.
Each year we raise funds through our member organizations (which have expanded beyond Pequannock, NJ into Lincoln Park, Wayne and Montville) and we use these funds to purchase carefully selected (and nutritionally beneficial) dry ingredients in bulk. In the Spring we engage the members of our communities in a packing event. Typically 600-800 people of all ages volunteer for this activity, During this experience we assemble the ready-to-cook bulk dry ingredients into plastic pouches that hold six servings each (a family-sized meal). Then, 36 heat-sealed pouches (216 meals) are boxed in a shipping carton, and later shipped to our on-the-ground partners in selected locations where nutritious food is needed. With this approach, we are able to provide a wholesome meal to a child or adult at a cost (to us) of about 25 CENTS – delivered to its destination. The recipients pay nothing.
We are collaborating for this year’s packing day with Outreach Program. This organization has run numerous packing days and its founders received the 5,000th Daily Point of Light Award which was presented at the White House in 2013 by Presidents Obama and H.W. Bush. Since 2004, Outreach Program through its network of community and corporate supporters has packaged in excess of 260 million meals for the hungry. In September AARP sponsored a food packing event with Outreach Program at the National Mall in Washington, DC involving thousands of volunteers who packed 1.5 MILLION meals in two days, beating last year’s record of 1.2 million meals.
Our extended local community has packed 828,000 meals (over 61 tons of food) since we started just a few years go. Grains of Hope volunteers were able to accomplish this through the financial generosity of caring people who contributed over $171,000 to our cause through their churches and community service organizations. This money purchased the bulk food and supplies that were converted into packaged meals through the efforts of community volunteers in an estimated 2,900 hours of contributed effort each year.
Grains of Hope is the flagship program of Community Partners for Hope, a not-for-profit organization based in Pequannock Township, NJ. In addition to addressing hunger and food insecurity through Grains of Hope, Community Partners for Hope has broadened its focus to include combating the opioid addiction epidemic facing the nation, our state and our communities. Other areas of focus are also being considered and will be announced as they are adopted.
